4 Signs It Was Time to Become My Own Boss
About a year ago, I began to yearn for being my own boss again.
Here’s how i decided to pursue my dream:
Family Life Changes
My husband decided to retire, and we spent a lot of time talking about what he would do next; how he would spend his days. I wanted to be part of that journey. But with my meeting-packed schedule and limited time off, it felt impossible to join him. Plus, my youngest child is a senior in high school, and he’s involved in Cross Country, Track and Field, and Nordic Skiing. He’s aiming for college scholarships, but most of his races happen far from home and during late afternoons, often conflicting with my work obligations. It made me rethink how much flexibility I really had.
I made it to the XC meet yesterday afternoon!
Overload of Work Projects
As a leader, I was constantly tasked with overseeing multiple cross-departmental projects. They always seemed to have the same deadlines, leading to a never-ending cycle of meetings and stress.
But can I tell you something?
It wasn’t just me—many of my friends and colleagues are experiencing the same overload and fatigue. Now, as a business owner, I look forward to deciding which projects are important to my clients and focus on doing them well.
New Leadership and a Restructure
A leadership shuffle and company restructuring weren’t earth-shattering, but they made me pause and reflect. Was this the right moment to step back into entrepreneurship? The fresh ideas brought in by new leadership made me realize it was time to let those I had mentored step into the spotlight, while I ventured out to build something of my own again.
The past 18 years in franchising have expanded my knowledge, honed my skills, and fueled my passion for helping others find businesses that enable them to achieve their aspirations, build wealth, and create the lifestyles they desire.
Opportunities Knocked
I’m the type of person who always asks, "What opportunity is before me?"
About 18 months ago, I was asked to oversee the franchise sales department. During that time, I noticed we were missing out on connecting with franchise business consultants at their association conferences, so I took the initiative to attend. I had experience owning a franchise and supporting a global network of franchisees, but the world of franchise consulting was new to me. It lit a spark—helping people discover their dreams, build business plans, and learn about different industries was exactly what I wanted to do.
These experiences made it clear: it was time for me to take the leap and become my own boss. Now, I have the freedom to create my own path, balancing my personal life and professional passions in a way that truly works for me.
A big part of success is going in a different direction.
And remember: if it was easy, everyone would do it.
