Do What You Love: Soul-Searching Questions and Tough Answers Got Me Unstuck

I've had this card on my desk for years. On the days I need a reminder, it always seems to surface at just the right moment. It keeps me grounded in why I chose to own my own business.

I'm fortunate to spend my days listening to others share what they love to do.

Interestingly, these conversations don’t start with passion. They usually begin with frustration—things they're tired of, drained by, or anxious about in their current jobs. They’re seeking more, something better.

But I always ask, "What do you love about your job? What excites you when you’re away from work?"

When they answer, I can feel the energy shift. Whether it’s mentoring others, playing music, or coaching their children’s sports teams, you can hear the passion behind their words.

Stuck

Many of us, myself included, get stuck. We justify staying in jobs we tolerate for the few parts we love.

Get Unstuck

This isn’t easy, but it’s necessary. I made myself write down the answers to these tough questions:

  • How do I feel about my job and company?
  • What do I genuinely enjoy doing?
  • What do I wish I didn’t have to do?
  • What do I want for my family and myself, both personally and professionally?
  • What don’t I want for my family and myself?
  • If I change nothing, what will my life look like in 5 years?

These questions were eye-opening and emotional. I even had to step away for a few days before going back to review my answers.

Yes, you can "Do What You Love." The first step is being brave enough to ask yourself these questions and self-discover what truly brings you joy.

Take that first step. Be bold.
